Maestro is listed at 72 of the 329 casinos we track (22%): 32 of 105 partners (30%) and 40 of 224 review-only casinos. 44 of the 72 (61%) accept Maestro for deposits only, so just 28 list a Maestro payout. The card itself is on its way out: according to Adyen, Mastercard stopped issuing Maestro in Europe on 1 July 2023, and Adyen and Mollie both point to 2027 as the end of field use. A card can also work in a shop and still fail online, because many Maestro cards are not enabled for e-commerce.
Being phased out: 1 July 2023 and 2027
Adyen reports that Mastercard stopped issuing Maestro cards in Europe on 1 July 2023 and that issuers must now issue Debit Mastercard. Cards issued earlier can stay in circulation until they expire, and an expired or lost card may be replaced with a Debit Mastercard without any action from the holder. Adyen gives 2027 as the latest date Maestro cards are expected to work, and Mollie says the network is fully phased out by late 2027. Those are second-hand statements from payment processors, not from Mastercard.
The same Adyen page counts about 400 million Maestro cards worldwide, launched in 1991, with Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria as key markets. Belarus, Russia and Switzerland are excluded from the transition. Adyen adds that many Maestro cards are simply not enabled for e-commerce, which is the reason a card can be declined at a casino cashier even when it works at a till.
